The Ultimate List of Black Owned Farms & Food Gardens

Black owned farms make up less than 2 percent of all farms in the United States.

According to a recent report, Black farmers lost 80 percent of their farmland from 1910 to 2007, often because they lacked access to loans or insurance needed to sustain their businesses.

The report mentions the “long and well-documented history of discrimination against Black farmers by the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture).”

It goes on to state that “The unequal administration of government farm support programs, crucial to protecting farmers from an inherently risky enterprise, has had a profound impact on rural communities of color.”

It is clear that that Black farmers need help now more than ever. We also need fresh produce they provide. Here is a list of Black owned farms and food gardens that you can support.

    • I’ve been searching for a black or POC or Native American owned flour mill to source flour for my vegan pizzas. I didn’t think it would be such a hard task, but i’ve Found nothing so far. I’m in South Carolina and would love to stay regional, but at this point, I’d be comforted to find anything out there!!!

  1. You are forgetting Mccrory Arkansas Webb’s Produce Farms And Market LLC. I’m the first African American Certified Produce Farmer in MY county (Woodruff County) I farm 77 acres. My main crop is Irish Potatoes and tomatoes.

    • I didn’t know that. I’ll pass on his info on to my Woodruff County friends and family. Where can we find your potatoes? We will drive over and buy some. Blessings to you and your family.

  2. Should change the title to “A list”… I have worked over 20 locations from homesteads to urban to orchards to commercial to nursery and none of those are mentioned. What qualified a farmer to be on this “ultimate” list?

    • The Black American Farm Movement is definately Dedicated and Determined to Flourish. My Dream is to Unite all of us into one Super Organization.and or Co-Operative for more Buying Power Financially. I am Determined to move our Agenda Foward. Please Contact me at 267 606 5990 About Agricultural Finacial Products.

    • This brings tears to my eyes because this is a whole large community that is not identified!
How about envisioning baking your produce deliverable or some place we can have access to your produce! This is absolutely great God Bless!

  3. The Nation of Islam has a 1,600 acre farm in Georgia and another farm in Michigan. Both supply food throughout the country on a consistent basis.

  4. In the International section it would have been nice to see the UK’s most successful black farmer Wilfred Emmanuel-Jones. He owns the farm and brand The Black Farmer and sells in most major supermarkets across the country.

  5. Vertical Life Farms should be added to the list of Black Owned Farms in Dallas…
    Vertical Life Farms

3014 Commerce St, Dallas, TX 75226
    (844) 388-3276

Unless there is some other Black Owned Farm under the name “Jacob’s Family Farm”, the link for Jacob’s Family farm in this article is a white owned farm in Illinois.

  6. What about Virginia? There is Vanguard Farm and there are many others. Please update the list. How about some info on resources to get a farm started? Loans, grants, classes, tours.

    • Free Haven Farms (Lawnside, NJ) &
      Soul Fire Farm (NY)
      Both offer educational classes!??
      I’ve only read abt them.

  7. Such important information. Thank you for highlighting the brave Black MEN AND WOMEN farmers who together continue this noble profession. I’m assuming nothing or very little existed before you took on this project of cataloging Black farms/businesses, so thank you. So many times people are critical of others’ efforts but for obvious reasons don’t take these time consuming, uncompensated tasks on themselves. Please know you are appreciated and keep up the excellent work!

    • Absolutely Beautiful! Please keep up the good works… Very happy to see many African American Farmers… didn’t have no idea… I will most definitely be buying.

  8. I’m glad to see this site I have question though where you all supply and how would common folks purchase crops from your farmers?

  9. I see someone has already mentioned Hilltop Urban Gardens in Tacoma, WA. Are you just no longer updating this article?

  10. Are any of these farms a part of ? It’s an international organization where people can learn about organic farming hands on by liviving with a host farmer for a set amount of time. I would love to learn about organic farming from the experts! Like Will Allen in Milwaukee Wisconsin with Growing Power. This man won the MacArthur Ferguson genius grant in 2008 for his work in sustainable farming. Unfortunately his farm was dissolved in 2017. So do you know of any programs like wwoof or something similar that might be specific to black farmers?

    • Regarding NE Iowa: You could try contacting Oneota Co-op in Decorah, IA. They purchase local produce and if they don’t know, can put you in touch with those who would know for Winneshiek and surrounding counties. oneotacoop dot com

  11. Families Anchored In Total Harmony “FAITH” CDC is located at 656 Carolina Street, Gary, IN 46402. We strive to support our local community with fresh and organic produce and raw honey. Faith Farms has expanded from a few vegetable plots to growing year round.

  12. There are over 500 black owned farms in California alone. African American Farmers of California Association started almost 20 years ago. AAFCA organization has compiled the most comprehensive list of Black farmers in the state. Their meetings are open to the public too. I suspect we are under-counting or missing MANY farms. For example,

I stumbled upon these Black-led organizations supporting black farmers in California:
    Fresno Freedom School
    West Fresno Family Resource Center
    The Butterfly Movement
    Communities United Restoring Mother Earth

On the website of the amazing Soul Fire Farm in NY (mentioned above), the following are well-established Black-led farming organizations (some of which are mentioned in the comments):

    Federation of Southern Cooperatives:
    Black Belt Justice Center:
    Black Urban Growers
Detroit Black Community Food Security Network:
    Land Loss Prevention Project:
    Southern Grassroots Economies Project:
    Cooperation Jackson:
Black Oaks Center for Sustainable Renewable Living:
    Truly Living Well
    Malcolm X Grassroots Movement

It is likely on us to spearhead a reliable accounting of this legacy.

  13. With some many Black own farms in America, why don’t we have a grocery chain stores selling product grown from our farmer. Jews, Mexican, Indian, Oriental every other ethnic group provides for their people. For black people to spend as much money as we do, we should support our people. We need to replace the thought that has been feed to us forever, that”black people can’t do anything right, they cheat each other and don’t forget they steal,” are just a few of the stereotypes that has been drummed into our very souls. 400 years being taught that anyone who looks like me can’t be trusted. It’s time we unite and build up our own, there’s more than enough black money to take over our choices.

  14. Hi everyone! There is a lot of great information here, between the original post and the additional comments that followed. So I’m pressing my luck to see what else is out there!

I’ve been going to an Amish farmers’ market for a while now. I do love them, but I’ve been trying to invest more in my community. But I can’t travel out to Philly (I’m in the Poconos) every time my family and I need food.

So are there any farmers’ markets, nurseries, farms, etc? in the NEPA (Northeastern Pennsylvania) area?

Any information about the question would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

  15. I thank God for our black farmers because black folks farming go way back. Black farmers got experience from there ancestors. Black farmers are hard workers. Black farmers seeks to use healthy feed for the food and animals I support you black farmers

  16. I love this article and am so glad to have the information to learn more about each farm. I’m disappointed however, that none are able to deliver to my area, but I understand the constraints under the system of exclusion and discrimination. I hope desperately to be able to patronize one of these NECESSARY businesses and have shared this article with everyone I know to encourage others to do the same.

  17. Hi! I really love this!
