Black Owned App for Beauty Salons and Stylists Has Raised Over $3 Million

ShearShare is a Black owned app that works like an Airbnb for hairstylists and barbers. Instead of renting houses, they rent salon and barbershop stations.

The company was created in 2017 when husband-and-wife team, Courtney and Dr. Tye Caldwell discovered that 40% of salon and barbershop space goes unused every day.

ShearShare helps stylists communicate directly with their clients, including about specials they might be offering. Throughout COVID-19, the company has been enabling licensed cosmetologists and barbers to rent a sanitized salon suite, station, or nearby barber chair by the day.

The spaces are provided on demand without having to sign a long-term contract or pay commissions. Salon and barbershop owners make money on their unused space at a time and price that’s convenient for them.

“As the second largest industry for freelancers turns its attention to a new operating normal, many beauty and barbering professionals are taking time to revisit their priorities, including how to better manage operating costs, maximize revenue, and access professional workspace on-demand,” said Courtney.

The company has, in total, raised $3.4 million in funding. According to the company, despite an economic slowdown,  they have experienced a 157% increase in users over the past few months.

Tye and Courtney said they will use the capital to fund product development, invest in marketing, and grow the now 16-person ShearShare team.

99 Year Old Beautician still serves clients as 100th Birthday nears

Callie Terrell is a 99 Year Old Beautician from Memphis, TN and she loves making women look and feel good.

“I work because this is what I’ve enjoyed doing all my life from a little girl. I always loved messing with my sister’s hair. They had beautiful hair and I always enjoyed doing this,” she told WREG.

Mrs. Terrell now only works to keep busy and to satisfy a few longtime customers, like her daughter Inez. Terrell is 99-years-old and anxiously awaits her 100th Birthday in November.

“Whenever I give out my birthday to people, you have to pay for it. November 26th, how old will I be? One-hundred, how about that?”

Her zeal for life is amazing and so is her work ethic.

WREG checked with the state of Tennessee, and they first issued her license to operate on January 30, 1945.

She rents space in a salon now, but once had her own thriving business.

She’s outlived almost all of her customers. “People my age that I used to be buddy, buddy with, I don’t have a single one. I was in a bridge club. I’m the only one in the club that’s living.”

Work is part of her secret to longevity.

“I’m not used to just being up in the house. You see, I worked so long I’ve just been around people and doing something exciting,” she said. “Most old people, they’re so dry and droll. I can’t deal with that. I gotta live and do the things that make me happy.”

Working brings her joy. But she plans to finally retire at the end of the year.

She says don’t expect to find her sitting around the house doing nothing.

“I just be waiting on somebody to call and say, ‘Callie, you busy? Well, come on over here.’ They say we’re doing so and so. So I jump in the car and go. I just want to do something.”

Mrs. Callie is still driving.

Her daughter stopped driving years ago. Mrs. Terrell is her chauffeur and hair stylist.

Under the state of Tennessee shows Mrs. Callie is indeed the oldest licensed cosmetologist in the state.

Black Owned Nail Salons You Should Know

I was scrolling through our Instagram page @shoppeblack and saw a video of a Black woman being attacked at an Asian nail salon in Brooklyn. Someone filmed employees of a nail salon attacking a customer with a broom and throwing liquid at her while she tries to fight them off.

The video which has since gone viral has led to multiple arrests, public outrage, and protests calling for the salon to shut down.

I’m going to file this incident under “Another reason to Support Black Owned Businesses.” In this case, Black owned nail salons.

While I know that there were training and entrepreneurship programs set up in the US for Asian immigrants, particularly Vietnamese women who still dominate ownership in the eight billion dollar nail industry, I still question why there are so few Black owned salons and/or why we choose not to go to them if we know about them.

That said, in response to some of your comments about us needing and wanting Black-owned nail salons to patronize, we’ve compiled a list around the US and internationally. (#BlackBusinessesInTheDiasporaMatterToo).

I’m sure we left out a few, so feel free to add another Black owned nail salons that do good work in the comments. And note, we’re not just talking about just any Black owned nail salons, but those that are clean, aesthetically nice, where they do good work and where customer service matters.
