Photodom is a camera store, full-service film lab, and photo studio based in Brooklyn, New York.
Founded by Dominick Lewis, it started in 2020 as a tiny third-floor walk-up. The mission was simple: make film photography more accessible, inclusive, and community-driven.
Quickly, Photodom became a haven for both beginners and experienced analog lovers.
From GoFundMe to Ground Floor Success
Photodom could not stay small for long. A GoFundMe launched to fund a move raised over $35,000 in less than 48 hours—showing how much the community craved this space.
That support led to a bright, accessible 1,600-square-foot ground-floor shop at 1717 Broadway. Now, Photodom welcomes anyone—from local artists to analog enthusiasts—seven days a week.
A Lab, a Studio, a Store, and a Hub
Photodom is multifaceted. Behind the counter is a full film lab that processes C-41, B&W, E-6, and ECN-2.
The team scans everything from 35mm to large format. You’ll also find camera rentals, a natural-light studio, and even exclusive Photodom film stocks like “Blue Dream” and “Super Nova.”
The retail area is stocked with cameras, film, lenses, darkroom supplies, apparel, and branded merch—from tote bags to stickers and mugs.
Education is at the core of Photodom’s mission. Workshops and artist residencies offer teaching and creative opportunities.
Critique series like “Artists Anonymous” provide feedback and community. The shop even offers a monthly $1,000 Photodom Grant to support photographic projects.
Through its Exposure blog and social media, Lewis and the Photodom team aim to inspire new voices and advance the analog medium.
Rooted in Identity and Representation
Photodom is one of the few Black‑owned camera stores and film labs in the country, and was the only one in Brooklyn when it launched.
Lewis opened it to serve creatives who often feel unseen or unwelcome in mainstream camera shops. Its existence proves that representation matters—and that community-supported businesses can thrive.
Photodom’s Instagram now reaches more than 23,000 followers, while local and national press coverage continues to highlight its impact.
