Museums Preserving Black History and Culture

Black-Led Museums and Cultural Institutions

Black-led museums and cultural institutions are organizations founded, governed, or directed by Black leaders and communities to preserve, interpret, and present Black history, culture, and artistic expression.

At a time when the truth of Black history is being challenged, these institutions play a vital role in safeguarding collective memory, elevating overlooked narratives, and creating spaces for education, reflection, and cultural continuity.

This list highlights Black-led museums and cultural institutions across the United States and internationally. Commercial art galleries are covered separately.
