Black owned farms make up less than 2 percent of all farms in the United States.
According to a recent report, Black farmers lost 80 percent of their farmland from 1910 to 2007, often because they lacked access to loans or insurance needed to sustain their businesses.
The report mentions the “long and well-documented history of discrimination against Black farmers by the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture).”
It goes on to state that “The unequal administration of government farm support programs, crucial to protecting farmers from an inherently risky enterprise, has had a profound impact on rural communities of color.”
It is clear that that Black farmers need help now more than ever. We also need fresh produce they provide. Here is a list of Black owned farms and food gardens that you can support.

I’ve been searching for a black or POC or Native American owned flour mill to source flour for my vegan pizzas. I didn’t think it would be such a hard task, but i’ve Found nothing so far. I’m in South Carolina and would love to stay regional, but at this point, I’d be comforted to find anything out there!!!

Should change the title to “A list”… I have worked over 20 locations from homesteads to urban to orchards to commercial to nursery and none of those are mentioned. What qualified a farmer to be on this “ultimate” list?
Hello. This is the largest and most up to date list available publicly thus far. We’re glad that you know many more Black owned locations and would be more than happy to add them.

In the International section it would have been nice to see the UK’s most successful black farmer Wilfred Emmanuel-Jones. He owns the farm and brand The Black Farmer and sells in most major supermarkets across the country.
Come visit or check us out Foxfire Ranch in Waterford, Mississippi http://www.foxfireranch.com
This list is grossly incomplete! No Black farms in Mississippi? Foolishness!
A more constructive comment would have included the names of the farms you speak of.
Thanks FoxFire!

Excellent information. Please keep me posted. Thank you. Blessings and Guidance.
Such important information. Thank you for highlighting the brave Black MEN AND WOMEN farmers who together continue this noble profession. I’m assuming nothing or very little existed before you took on this project of cataloging Black farms/businesses, so thank you. So many times people are critical of others’ efforts but for obvious reasons don’t take these time consuming, uncompensated tasks on themselves. Please know you are appreciated and keep up the excellent work!
Absolutely Beautiful! Please keep up the good works… Very happy to see many African American Farmers… didn’t have no idea… I will most definitely be buying.
I’m glad to see this site I have question though where you all supply and how would common folks purchase crops from your farmers?
How do we get Grow Baton Rouge added to the list, we have a fleet of Mobile Market vehicles, community gardens and urban farms!
I see someone has already mentioned Hilltop Urban Gardens in Tacoma, WA. Are you just no longer updating this article?
Really great info, but I didn’t see Black Oaks farm in Illinois.
It’s called Black Oaks Center for Sustainable Living. https://blackoakscenter.blog/
Are any of these farms a part of wwoof.net ? It’s an international organization where people can learn about organic farming hands on by liviving with a host farmer for a set amount of time. I would love to learn about organic farming from the experts! Like Will Allen in Milwaukee Wisconsin with Growing Power. This man won the MacArthur Ferguson genius grant in 2008 for his work in sustainable farming. Unfortunately his farm was dissolved in 2017. So do you know of any programs like wwoof or something similar that might be specific to black farmers?
Are there any black owned farms in North Carolina (Raleigh, Durham area)?

There are over 500 black owned farms in California alone. African American Farmers of California Association started almost 20 years ago. AAFCA organization has compiled the most comprehensive list of Black farmers in the state. Their meetings are open to the public too. I suspect we are under-counting or missing MANY farms. For example,
I stumbled upon these Black-led organizations supporting black farmers in California:
Fresno Freedom School
West Fresno Family Resource Center
The Butterfly Movement
Communities United Restoring Mother Earth
On the website of the amazing Soul Fire Farm in NY (mentioned above), the following are well-established Black-led farming organizations (some of which are mentioned in the comments):

With some many Black own farms in America, why don’t we have a grocery chain stores selling product grown from our farmer. Jews, Mexican, Indian, Oriental every other ethnic group provides for their people. For black people to spend as much money as we do, we should support our people. We need to replace the thought that has been feed to us forever, that”black people can’t do anything right, they cheat each other and don’t forget they steal,” are just a few of the stereotypes that has been drummed into our very souls. 400 years being taught that anyone who looks like me can’t be trusted. It’s time we unite and build up our own, there’s more than enough black money to take over our choices.
Some more to add to the DMV list!

BLACK EXCELLENCE.. THANK YOU
Hi everyone! There is a lot of great information here, between the original post and the additional comments that followed. So I’m pressing my luck to see what else is out there!
I’ve been going to an Amish farmers’ market for a while now. I do love them, but I’ve been trying to invest more in my community. But I can’t travel out to Philly (I’m in the Poconos) every time my family and I need food.
So are there any farmers’ markets, nurseries, farms, etc? in the NEPA (Northeastern Pennsylvania) area?
Any information about the question would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!
